Can One “Love” an Editorial Page?
by Tucker Eskew
October 30th, 2007

I tell my children not to say they “love” something if it can’t love them back. The word and the very idea are devalued when one “loves” a junk food or a movie. I know, I’m old fashioned and come by it naturally. My parents were/are sticklers.
So now you know it means something when I [...]

Who’s Leading?
by Jim Coleman
October 29th, 2007

Where is the action on climate change issues going to come from?
Every day, we see the media discuss what each of us can do individually to “green” our country. Individual action is important, but results in small steps toward reducing fossil fuel use will lower our country’s dependence on foreign oil and reduce emissions [...]

Hollywood Wives
by Tucker Eskew
October 22nd, 2007

In case you missed it, check out this piece in Sunday’s New York Times about representatives of the Tinsel Town types descending on Washington, DC to make their case for a climate change bill.
Needless to say, this isn’t an alliance of policy types making a grassroots plea for an energy security/job creating climate bill. Not [...]

Cal Thomas is Good
by Tucker Eskew
October 17th, 2007

Regular Terra Rossa readers know I’m not a fan of the morally elitist, gloom-and-doom climate rhetoric of some lefties. But why not leverage the liberals’, er, energy to get something smart conservatives want? That’s good politics, right?
And that’s the point of a recent column by well-known conservative Cal Thomas on Townhall.com. Cal’s onto something…

The Answer, My Friend, is Wind
by Whit Ayres
October 16th, 2007

As I’ve mentioned many times before on this site, renewable sources of energy will only achieve widespread use in this country when they are cost competitive with fossil fuels. In many parts of the country, wind power is already cost competitive, and provides a significant amount of electricity. A prime area where this technology has [...]

Al Gore – Nobel Laureate
by Tucker Eskew
October 12th, 2007

We can (and should) have a debate about the criteria for selecting recipients of the Nobel Peace Prize. But that’s for another day. Today Mr. Gore has received tremendous recognition for his efforts. He gets a (brief…very brief, please) moment in the spotlight…Congratulations, sir.
But let me illustrate the challenge this award represents [...]

A Price Worth Paying
by Whit Ayres
October 11th, 2007

There was an interesting article in the Wall Street Journal yesterday that detailed the efforts of several large companies, including Unilever, Proctor & Gamble, and Jarden, to make their products more environmentally friendly. Reacting to pressure from Wal-Mart, the biggest retailer of their products, these companies have been working to decrease packaging size by concentrating [...]

Where There’s a Whit, There’s a Way.
by Tucker Eskew
October 9th, 2007

Terra Rossa’s own Dr. Whit Ayres, pollster extraordinaire, spoke Saturday at the Republican Environmental Leadership Conference in San Antonio, TX where he said that if his fellow Republicans want to win elections, one thing we should do is reclaim conservation as a calling card. Whit knows his stuff, having directed a lot of traffic at [...]

A New Endangered Species?
by Whit Ayres
October 8th, 2007

There’s a lot of talk about endangered species these days, and the list seems to be ever-growing. Well, I have a new one to add: Republicans in Congress. Everyone knows that independent voters went overwhelmingly for Democrats in the 2006 wipeout, and the GOP stands to do just as badly in 2008 if it can’t [...]

Why did the chicken cross the road?
by Jim Coleman
October 4th, 2007

Question: Why did the chicken cross the road?
Answer: To reduce his carbon footprint.
Researchers at The Ohio State University are using eggshells to streamline a process to make hydrogen for automotive fuel cells. The shells assist the process of turning gasified coal into hydrogen gas. The egg shells allow researchers to cut down [...]

Iran’s Going Green? Not Likely.
by Tucker Eskew
October 1st, 2007

In his address to the UN General Assembly last week Iranian President Mahmoud Ahmadinejad defied Security Council demands that his nation stop its uranium enrichment program, again claiming Iran is pursuing nuclear power for peaceful purposes.
I seriously doubt Iran’s motive here is to reduce its carbon footprint.
And my view is that pursuing new clean-energy options [...]

To limit pollution and reduce our dependence on foreign energy sources we should:

Implement a market-based ‘Cap and Trade’ solution
Increase taxes and government subsidies
Buy tickets to see Leo’s latest flop
Do nothing and hope it will get better
Undecided, but we do need to find a solution
