A Creation Care Convert

The concept of “Creation Care” – that we have a responsibility to provide responsible stewardship of God’s Creation – is a common belief among many religious denominations.

Today 46 senior leaders in the Southern Baptist Convention, the largest Protestant denomination in the United States, signed a resolution urging their flock to do more to stop climate change. Among the signers of “A Southern Baptist Declaration on the Environment and Climate Change” are three of the Southern Baptist Convention’s last four presidents.

Here’s some of what they said:

“Our cautious response to these issues in the face of mounting evidence may be seen by the world as uncaring, reckless and ill-informed. We can do better. … Some of us have required considerable convincing before becoming persuaded that these are real problems that deserve our attention. But now we have seen and heard enough to be persuaded that these issues are among the current era’s challenges that require a unified moral voice.”

I know from my experience in national and Southern politics — this is a powerful new voice in the climate change debate. I hope conservatives are listening.

To limit pollution and reduce our dependence on foreign energy sources we should:

Implement a market-based ‘Cap and Trade’ solution
Increase taxes and government subsidies
Buy tickets to see Leo’s latest flop
Do nothing and hope it will get better
Undecided, but we do need to find a solution
