Going green benefits Columbus area business
The Lantern 05.30.07
Kermit the frog might think “It’s not easy being green,” but many businesses are proving him wrong by initiating easy, eco-friendly alternatives in their company practices.

Green power?
Washington Post 05.30.07
CONVENTIONAL wisdom holds that support for clamping down on greenhouse gas emissions has reached a tipping point. With gasoline prices above $3 a gallon and only a rump of hard-core skeptics still questioning the science of global warming, the time seems ripe to begin weaning the country off carbon. More and more U.S. politicians, from New York Mayor Michael R. Bloomberg (R) to California Gov. Arnold Schwarzenegger (R), say they want to cut greenhouse gas emissions, and proposals for how and by how much abound.

The coal trap
New York Times 05.30.07
There is a rule for judging solutions to the twin problems of energy dependence and global warming: A policy designed to solve one problem should not make the other worse. But that is a likely outcome of the many “energy independence” bills circulating in Congress that aim to build a whole new generation of coal-to-liquid plants to convert coal into automotive fuel.

Washington Post 05.30.07
It’s one of those delicious moments when Washington’s hypocrisy is on full and unembarrassed display. On the one hand, some of America’s leading politicians condemn high gasoline prices and contend that they stem from “gouging” by oil companies. On the other, many of the same politicians warn against global warming and implore us to curb our use of fossil fuels that emit carbon dioxide, the main greenhouse gas.

Mr. Hubbard, dean and professor of finance and economics at Columbia Business School, was chairman of the Council of Economic Advisers under President Bush.
The case for action to combat global climate change has grown increasingly compelling in recent years. Sadly the same can not be said for specific proposals to address the problem. Ideas grounded in sound science and good economics have been lacking.

US, Chinese moves improve prospects for global warming
Wall Street Journal 06.01.07
Thursday’s dramatic policy shift by the White House on climate change, calling on the world’s top economic powers to negotiate long-term goals to reduce greenhouse gases, significantly improves the outlook for future international agreements to address global warming. Improving the outlook even further, China, which is set to surpass the U.S. as the world’s top emitter of greenhouse gases this year, said it is about to release its long-awaited strategic plan on addressing its own emissions problems.

Playing to the crowd: Talk about warming
New York Times 06.01.07
President Bush has been feeling the heat on global warming. He’s been feeling it from Congress, from state governors, from the business community and, most recently and powerfully, from America’s closest foreign allies, who are fed up with his passivity on the issue and desperate for him to show some real leadership.
