Don’t buy into drilling

The current drive by President Bush and the oil companies to increase offshore drilling should ring familiar, for it mirrors the administration’s manipulation of public opinion in preparation for the U.S. invasion of Iraq. After the shock of the Sept. 11 attacks, Bush skillfully conflated Iraq with Osama bin Laden and used the public’s fear and desire for retribution to create support for the invasion. The administration also sweetened the deal by dangling the prospect of cheap Iraqi oil. Alas, Saddam Hussein had nothing to do with 9/11 , the invasion helped drive up the price of oil by diminishing Iraqi production, and cost thousands of lives and billions of dollars.
