GOP Govs. Continue to Lead on Climate
by Tucker Eskew

Fret not, Terra Rossa readers. Republican governors seem undeterred by recent inaction on climate legislation by the U.S. Senate.

Utah Governor Jon Huntsman, the newly elected chairman of the Western Governors Association, said this weekend he plans to continue the WGA’s work on climate and even wants to “reach overseas to address climate change and energy” issues with the Chinese and other nations.

And in Florida, Governor Charlie Crist kicked-off his second climate change summit last week with a focus on finding ways to reduce his state’s greenhouse gas pollution. He gathered “800 policymakers, academics, scientists, environmentalists and business types to explore opportunities for expanding Florida’s fledgling renewable and alternative energy industries.”

These aren’t the only two Republican governors committed to fighting climate change. There’s also Governor Schwarzenegger in California and Governor Pawlenty in Minnesota, to name just two.

I hope their leadership is proof of something we Republicans like to believe: the best solutions to our most urgent national issues often have their origins in the states.

To limit pollution and reduce our dependence on foreign energy sources we should:

Implement a market-based ‘Cap and Trade’ solution
Increase taxes and government subsidies
Buy tickets to see Leo’s latest flop
Do nothing and hope it will get better
Undecided, but we do need to find a solution
