Gov. Tim Pawlenty Gets It Right

What does Gov. Tim Pawlenty (R-MN) have in common with Paris Hilton and Lindsey Lohan?

Not much, folks, but as one Silicon Valley new energy blogger said in Saturday’s New York Times, “green-focused Web sites are getting about as trendy as celebutante D.U.I.’s.”

And Gov. Pawlenty deserves to be here on this red-state (conservative) but green-green (entrepreneurial and environmental) website, trendy or not.

I met him at the 2004 convention when we both spoke on caucus teams, traveling from delegation to delegation with the message of the day. Very impressive.

Want a quick refresher on Gov. Pawlenty’s credentials? Easy: Check out Matthew Continetti’s Weekly Standard profile from April. He’s consistently opposed raising taxes in Minnesota. He supports merit-based pay for Minnesota’s teachers, not rewards based on seniority. He was a well-received speaker at the 2007 Conservative Political Action Conference.

Now, how about Gov. Pawlenty’s comments on on the new energy future? As the new chairman of the National Governors’ Association, he urged states to take the lead on policies that limit carbon emissions and lead to new energy technologies. “The false premise of some of the critics is that you’ll wreck the economy,” he said. “I suggest if you do this correctly, it will be a boost to the economy.” He also talked about how it would boost our national security by reducing our foreign oil dependence.

This southern conservative from South Carolina is looking forward to more leadership from Gov. Pawlenty on new energy, and new issues for Republicans to win on in a fast-changing world.

To limit pollution and reduce our dependence on foreign energy sources we should:

Implement a market-based ‘Cap and Trade’ solution
Increase taxes and government subsidies
Buy tickets to see Leo’s latest flop
Do nothing and hope it will get better
Undecided, but we do need to find a solution
