If You Thought Gigli was Bad Wait to You See Affleck in Climate Change Solutions
by Jim Coleman
July 27th, 2007

During the Live Earth Concert Ben Affleck offered his solution to Global Climate Change and demonstrated just how out of touch Hollywood continues to be on important issues. The artsy, filmed in an Herb Ritz edgy black and white, PSA had Ben rocking out on his iPod. His voiceover suggested that the next time you want to buy a CD you should download it to your computer. He suggested that this will stop climate change because CD manufactures will not have to use trucks to transport CDs to stores.

This is just another celebrity giving us a ridiculous solution to a serious problem. His solution will cost jobs and harm our way of life. Serious solutions are not stopping transportation of goods and services. The solution lies in the improvement of fuel efficiency and the use of biodiesels. I hate to break the news to you Ben but the iPod you were using was probably delivered by truck to the store where your personal assistant drove her Range Rover to purchase it for you. Many of the bands that are probably on Mr. Affleck’s iPod have taken great strides to help climate change. Groups like Guster, Jack Johnson, Dave Mathews and Martin Sexton are all touring the country using busses that run on carbon reducing biofuels.

Climate Change solutions can be achieved that not only improve the environment but also can improve our economy. Next time you want to buy a CD of your favorite band, walk or ride your bike down to the local music store. You will have reduced you community’s carbon footprint and you may have saved the job of the independent record store owner.

  1. Conservative Forum Says:

Ben Affleck and his ilk do this for notoriety and fame. I think they could care less if global warming exists or not.

  2. WWW Says:

Your missing the big picture here.I think every little bit helps to save the enviroment.Even if it’s something like downloading music.Do you know how much waste goes into producing CDs.And I’m sure all the bands you mention tour ,right? But you fail to mention how much garbage is produced and how much energy is overused in a concert.I could go and on .Instead of being anal about every single detail. You should be giving kudos to people who are trying to make a difference in any way they can .Instead of whinnning about it

  3. Anybody But Al Gore Says:

One step up on Ben’s plan, let’s just encourage people to sing to themselves - no ipods, no cds, no waste.

  4. Jim Coleman Says:

    Dear WWW,

    Is this Jennifer Garner?

All of the bands I mentioned do tour and they tour with alternative fuels. That is the big picture and a pragmatic soltion to addressing climate change. Your strategy of eliminating CD’s and concerts is not going to save the planet and staying inside and livng my life on a computer is not a world I want to live in.

We have to find pragmatic soltuions that will enhance our lives. “Every little bit” does not help when people’s jobs our threatened by ridiculous ravings of a mediocre actor. I think Ben Affleck could do more for the enviroment if he continues to make crappy movies and nobody drives their cars to the local cineplex.

To limit pollution and reduce our dependence on foreign energy sources we should:

Implement a market-based ‘Cap and Trade’ solution
Increase taxes and government subsidies
Buy tickets to see Leo’s latest flop
Do nothing and hope it will get better
Undecided, but we do need to find a solution
