Is a Carbon Tax the Best We Can Do?
by Tucker Eskew
December 4th, 2006

Voters in Boulder, Colorado last month approved what environmentalists say may be the nation’s first “carbon tax.

Personally, I’m also hoping it’s the last.

Don’t get me wrong. I favor strong action to reduce greenhouse gas emissions. I just think new taxes are the wrong way to do it.

I say implement a market-based solution such as cap and trade. Create a marketplace that incentivizes (not subsidizes) businesses and entrepreneurs to develop new clean-energy innovations that reduce CO2 emissions and bring those innovations to market.

To limit pollution and reduce our dependence on foreign energy sources we should:

Implement a market-based ‘Cap and Trade’ solution
Increase taxes and government subsidies
Buy tickets to see Leo’s latest flop
Do nothing and hope it will get better
Undecided, but we do need to find a solution
