New coal-fired electricity plants are increasingly coming under sensible scrutiny, the Washington Post’s Steven Mufson reports today. With public opinion against carbon-belching coal plants growing louder, more power companies are shelving ideas to invest in new ones.
That’s not to suggest that our energy future is, well, hazy. Numerous clean-energy alternatives are vying to step into the coal-power void. Some you’ve already heard about like nuclear, wind, and solar. But what about other innovations that are capitalizing on the emerging clean-energy marketplace?
How about this? Wave energy. According to a recent Business 2.0 Magazine article: “The potential market for wave energy – electricity generated by offshore turbines – is worth a staggering $1 trillion worldwide… In the United States alone, wave technology could supply 6.5 percent of the nation’s energy.”
Stuff like this isn’t loopy. And I say that as someone who’s been skeptical in the past.
