Many conservative thinkers (Newt jumps immediately to mind) have said Republicans need to start offering solutions to climate change based on our party’s principles. They’re right, of course – a strategy of denial will cost Republicans at the voting booth. My good friend and fellow Terra Rossa blogger Whit Ayres has already warned us about this.
I recently read three news articles that illustrate why leading on cap and trade can be good for Republicans when the ballots are cast:
Anglers and hunters are increasingly concerned about climate change and its impact on wildlife habitats. This “hook and bullet” vote tends to lean right on Election Day.
So is the evangelical community. They hosted a “Creation Care” summit last week that was marked by participation from evangelicals and those of the mainline Protestant, Catholic, Jewish and Muslim traditions.
And let’s not forget the gears that keep our market-based economy humming along – entrepreneurs. They’re already plowing millions of their entrepreneurial dollars into development of low-carbon products. The article I read indicated nearly 400 start-ups are operating 600 carbon-mitigation projects in the USA, with the number of companies set to triple the next two years, says consulting firm Point Carbon. If Republicans pull up a seat and put their mark on climate policy it would unleash even more opportunities for entrepreneurs to transform our economy.
Are you on board?
